Groote Eylandt Mining Company (GEMCO/ South 32 – Division of BHP)

Redline Group has been undertaking projects on Groote Eylandt since 2012 for Groote Eylandt Mining Company – BHP Billiton. The first project completed was the Town Water Supply which included the construction; installation and commissioning of 18km of DN450PN12.5 HDPE.

This infrastructure upgrade replaced the existing pipeline between Angurugu Pump Station and the township of Alyangula. Various outlet connections for supplying water to indigenous communities and BHP Billiton’s Manganese operations were used. Construction included numerous creek, bridge, haul road crossings and highway under bores.

Redline further secured their working relationship with BHP Billiton in award of longer term contracts to deliver multiple work packages. These works primarily involved water infrastructure pipeline construction and engineering services. These included integral packages; Water Strategy Pipeline, TSF11a (Slimes Tailings Storage Facility) and TSF14 (sands Tailings Storage Facility) upgrades.

Groote Eylandt is located in the Gulf of Carpentaria and all plant and equipment for this project was barged from Darwin, some 640km away. BHP Billiton (as GEMCO) has been successfully producing Manganese at this facility since 1965.
